A surfer tucked inside a hollow green wave, with the sand of the beach in the foreground

Hey there. I’m Pedro.

I build software for a living and surf with everything else.

Senior software architect at Fetchly Labs, Rails at heart. I build for teams in the US from a desk in Florianópolis, Brazil. The rest of the time, I’m near the water.

Live from Florianópolis, my home break Asking the buoy how it looks out there right now.

Hello

Nice to meet you. Here’s the short version

I grew up in an island in the south of Brazil, which explains most of this page. I studied Information Systems at UFSC and finished with a final project graded 10 out of 10, which I’m still a little proud of.

Outside of work, I surf. It’s the thing I love most in this world. Coding is a close second, and I mean that as a real compliment to coding. It still doesn’t come anywhere near what surfing feels like.

Work

Full professional journey

I’ve spent the last few years building for teams in the US while living in Brazil. Here’s roughly how it went.

  1. 2022 to now

    Denver, Colorado

    Fetchly Labs now

Software Engineer, now Senior Software Architect

Where I grew up as an engineer. I helped build the Rails 7 template we start new projects from, with Hotwire and Stimulus instead of a separate SPA. I led the rework of a Rails API that now handles over two hundred million records with Sidekiq and Redis, and fixed a database pool issue that had haunted our biggest app for six months. Along the way I went from engineer to senior to architect, which mostly means more whiteboards.

    • Ruby on Rails
    • Hotwire
    • Stimulus
    • Sidekiq
    • React
    • PostgreSQL
    • AWS
  2. 2024 to 2026

    Denver, Colorado

    RE/MAX

    Senior Software Engineer

Nobody in the world sells more real estate than RE/MAX, and I got to work on the software behind it: remax.com and Wemlo, the mortgage side. I led Loan Scenarios, a feature that estimates and compares mortgage options for people trying to figure out what they can afford. I also cut the Cypress suite from two hours to twenty minutes, rebuilt notifications so they run two and a half times faster, and reviewed most of the pull requests that came through.

    • Ruby on Rails
    • React
    • Next.js
    • PostgreSQL
    • Cypress
    • TypeScript
    • AWS
  3. 2021 to 2022

    Florianópolis, Brazil

    Travel Station

    Founding Software Engineer

A social network for people travelling to the same place at the same time. I wrote most of it in Rails and React, we pitched the MVP to investors, and it bought the company a full year of runway. Weekly meetings with the founders taught me more about product than any course could.

    • Ruby on Rails
    • React
    • Next.js
    • PostgreSQL
    • AWS
  4. 2020 to 2021

    Brazil

    Mindz

    Junior Software Engineer

First job. I built an email marketing platform from scratch that reached over three million people, dockerized the dev environment so new folks could start in an afternoon, and talked the team into test-driven development. Python and Django back then. I found Ruby soon after and never looked back.

    • Python
    • Django
    • Vue
    • Docker
    • MySQL
  5. 2020 to 2025

    Florianópolis, Brazil

    UFSC

Bachelor of Information Systems (Top 2% LATAM)

Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Math, data structures, algorithms, software engineering, and a lot of surfing between classes.

    • Algorithms
    • Data structures

A Cypress suite, before and after I got annoyed with it

200M+

Records a Rails API I reworked now handles without sweating

10 / 10

Final project grade at UFSC. Still a little proud.

Surfing

Number one, by a mile

The thing I love most in this world. If the swell is good, I’m out. Dawn at Praia Mole and no phone for a couple hours. I’ve never once regretted going.

Or click a model. Swiping works too.

The people

None of this happens alone

A family is my favorite data structure, a graph, so here it is drawn as one.

They put up with the surf schedule, the late nights, and the constant talking about both. If you ever meet any of them, tell them I said thanks. I don’t say it enough.

Dad’s side
Mom’s side

8 nodes, 7 edges, 3 generations. No cycles, I checked.

Say hi

Let’s talk.

If you want to build something, fix something, or argue about Rails versus everything else, my inbox is open. I read every message myself and I answer, usually within a day. Unless the swell is up. Then two. Maybe three if I'm in a surftrip.
